Timber Shores Offers Real Opportunity for an Economic Boost

It’s no secret that Northport could use more … more places for people to stay and more business for our local merchants.

If you’ve lived here a long time you know that what grocer and township treasurer Elden Dame told his daughter Bobbie is true. He said “Timber Shores is the best thing that even happened to Northport.”

What does Timber Shores offer the community?

  • A $15 million build out.

  • Property and municipal taxes of an estimated $168,000 a year.

  • Annual payroll and related expenses of $500,000 a year

  • About 20 jobs for full- and part-time workers.

  • Additional revenue generated by campers at our local businesses.

Ask someone who lived here when the original Timber Shores was operating about its positive impact on Northport and local residents. For example: Caryn Charter’s parents ran the Donut Shop – now Barb’s Bakery. When Timber Shores was operating they made 90-120 pounds of dough each morning. When it closed that number dropped to 30-40 pounds.

Plus the interchange between Timber Shores campers and locals also had a positive impact. You’ll hear stories of lifelong friendships, of serious romances that led to marriage and more.

Campers are a pretty great group of people to have visiting the area. They love nature, they love the great outdoors and they’re friendly folks to have around.

Leelanau Township’s amended commercial resort zoning ordinance is intended to stop Timber Shores. The amendment is illegal and unnecessary.

To support Timber Shores vote NO on the amended ordinance Nov. 8.
